A patient-level electronic health records system for mobile and desktop.

Tamanu is an EMR providing comprehensive, end-to-end patient management across outpatient, inpatient, emergency, laboratory, and imaging services.

BUILT ON 5 PRINCIPLES

Free and open-source

Contribute to the global development community, with the security of no-one ‘owning’ your code.

Highly secure data

Industry-standard encryption protocols, powerful security features, fit-for-purpose.

Seamless to integrate

HL7 FHIR compliant, OpenHIE principles adherence. Custom integrations with mSupply, Tupaia, DHIS2. ICD-10, GS1 compatible.

For desktop and mobile

Out-of-the-box for inpatients, outpatients and community, no 3rd-party plug-ins needed.

Sync-enabled

Work online or offline with no limits, syncing whenever internet is available, no latency.

Why Tamanu exists

Health providers need access to quality systems that are sustainable.

The reality? Systems that assume big budgets, reliable internet or lots of IT resources. Decision makers are left with a choice: buy an expensive system that doesn’t fit the context, use a mix of platforms that don’t sync, or stay with paper records entirely.

Tamanu was designed to fill this gap, by providing enterprise-grade functionality with no licensing fees, seamless integrations and the ability to work offline.

Trusted worldwide

To date, more than 14 million clinical encounters and 1.5 million patient records have been entered into Tamanu by 3,000 healthcare workers.

Proven at scale

Implemented in nine countries since 2020: Syria, Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Palau, Samoa, Tuvalu and Kiribati. Scalable to 1000+ simultaneous facilities.

Interoperable

At its core, Tamanu was designed to integrate seamlessly with external health systems using APIs.

Overview

Tamanu Desktop

At the hospital level, a desktop-enabled version allows a full suite of functionality, including scheduling, admissions, medication orders and admin, lab and imaging requests, bed management, discharges and patient management (including treatment notes). The desktop app works offline, syncing with a central server whenever an internet connection becomes available.

The platform is designed to interface with existing patient administration systems or Master Patient Indexes (assuming publicly available APIs) and allow full integration with laboratory and radiology IT systems where they are available.

Tamanu Mobile

At the clinic level, a mobile version offers intuitive functionality designed for mobile health workers. Capturing diagnoses, treatments, vitals and the recording of events such as vaccinations and ante-natal visits. Patients can be tracked by program registry and medication orders made.

Clinicians in connected facilities have access to the same record – a single source of truth. All data is captured on a patient’s record, regardless of whether they are undergoing major surgery at a referral hospital or attending their local clinic for a basic check-up.

The app is available across all Android devices.

Clinical service delivery

Powerful, secure, highly usable.

Tamanu adapts easily to different clinical contexts, patient groups and data needs. The Program Registry module enables longitudinal patient and cohort management. Admins can configure everything through the front-end panel, including program registries, forms, roles, permissions, users and reference data, without needing developers.

Immunisation registery

Track routine, catch-up and campaign vaccines for individuals, capturing all necessary information according to WHO data models. Desktop and mobile, decision support, vaccine certificates with VDS. Population-level reporting, dashboards, map overlays. Can also be used for MDA programs.

Inpatient management

Assign patients to departments and locations. Schedule any patient across multiple resources, including locations (wards, lab, theatres etc), staff and equipment. Track diagnoses, vitals, clinical notes, medication orders and procedures.

Emergency department

Triage workflow, with emergency department whiteboard and automated waiting times. Manage patient workflow through triage, ED care, observation and hospital admission.

NCD screening

Screen patients remotely for non-communicable diseases, with automated BMI and health indicator calculations. Use WHO’s NCD risk table integration for automated risk assessments. Workflow automation for referrals and care plans.

Lab and imaging requests

Submit laboratory, radiology and imaging requests and add data such as patient contact tracing details. Any lab in the network can publish results through an online widget. Tamanu is also designed to integrate with your external systems.

Vertical program data collection

Highly configurable vertical program data collection module. Collect survey data against individual patients on desktop or mobile and compile it with other patient data.

.

A single system for all healthcare settings.

Patient Management and Registration

Use Tamanu as your single ‘source of truth’ for every clinical use case and facility type. Provide a continuum of care for all encounters and vertical program data needs.

Patient Master Index (PMI) module

Use Tamanu as a PMI or connect to an external service.

  • Patient Master Index (PMI): Central patient registration system with unique identifier generation, HL7 FHIR compatibility, and OpenHIE adherence for interoperability with external clinical systems
  • Comprehensive patient records: Track patient details, diagnoses, clinical notes, allergies, and family relationships across all facility visits and departments
  • Data continuity: Data moves with the patient across facilities.

.

Best-practice, seamless integrations.

IntegrationS

Connect your systems and break down data-silos. We use best-practice principles and standards to ensure the most secure and consistent exchange of health data.

Interoperability and data exchange

Integrate Tamanu with existing systems via best-practice;

  • HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) compliant APIs
  • OpenHIE (Open Health Information Exchange) adherence for interoperability with external clinical systems
  • Existing integrations: Health Information Systems (HIS), Logistics Management Information Systems (LMIS), Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and other interoperable/integrated healthcare information systems (DHIS2, mSupply, Tupaia, SENAITE).

OUR ORIGINS

Story behind the name

Tamanu was originally developed for Pacific island settings. The Tamanu plant has been recognised throughout the Pacific, Asia and Africa for hundreds of years for its therapeutic qualities, particularly as an anti-inflammatory, moisturiser, anti-bacterial and as a cosmetic.

All our icons have also been designed by a Pacific Islander, Robert Taupongi, to represent the Pacific in a meaningful way.
